Sotheby's Art Auction in Johannesburg was held on Monday the 12th May 2003.

After a few disappointing sales over the last year there is an indication that quality works are finding their way onto the market once again. There were however fewer Contemporary works which is
disappointing as the buyers were just getting used to this alternative market.

There
were some important works by Irma Stern on the sale.  Work by  Pierneef,  Wenning, Sumner, Naude Maggie Laubser, Preller, Sekoto, Pemba, and  Volschenk were also included in the sale as well as contemporary work by William Kentridge, Karel Nel, Willie Bester, Norman Catherine, Robert Hodgins,  Penny Siopis and John Meyer.

A few of the highlights : (hammer prices excluding commission are listed)
