controversial exhibition entitled 'I LOVE AFRICA" by local artist, Brett
Murray, celebrates the unveiling of his public sculpture in St Georges'
Mall, Cape Town.
The sculpture entitled "AFRICA" was selected from 60
entries in the 1998 Public Sculpture Competition organised by the Cape Town Urban Arts Foundation in collaboration with the Association for Visual Arts(AVA) and
the JK Gross Trust.
The 3m high bronze sculpture inspired by a curio figure from the Ivory Coast
and the American
cartoon character, Bart Simpson, was unveiled by Sheryl Ozinsky today.
The exhibition at the Brendon Bell-Roberts Fine Art Gallery includes works in metal and perspex which
expand on themes related to the sculpture that challenges ideas of ownership, identity and memory.
Brett obtained his Masters Degree in Fine Art at the University of Cape Town, majoring in
sculpture and established the Sculpture Department at the University of Stellenbosch, where he lectured.
